What's New with the BIMA Data Archive

What's New

Mass-store scheduled downtime

Due to expansion of the building which houses the NCSA computers, the mass storage system will be unavailable starting on Monday, 27 November 2000 at 7:00 am CST. NCSA is reserving three days for this event, although perhaps as little as 24 hours will be necessary. During this period, users will be unable to retrieve data from mass-store. In general, this means that data which was observed more than about three weeks prior to the shut down will not be retrievable. Newer data will be present in the archive's local disk cache and will still be accessible.

Advanced Search Page Available

A new Advanced Search Page is now available for complex searches of the archive's database. This page will be replaced in the near future with a more sophisticated interface.

New Archive Interface Released to Users

We are happy to announce the launching of a new web interface to the the BIMA Data Archive. This new interface is part of an ongoing project to develop an automated pipeline reduction system for data coming from the BIMA telescope. When the pipeline comes into production, you will not only be able to download raw telescope data but also calibrated uv-data and deconvolved images. One of the purposes of the new archive interface, therefore, is to make it easier to see what datasets exists in the archive for your observing projects as well as make it easier to download them in the fewest number of "clicks".

Here are some of the new features you will notice:

Note that, for virtually all archive users, no new configuring will be needed. The login and password remain the same. Users may still use DaRT or its predecessor, xmrecvlist, to download multiple datasets. (Simple single-dataset downloading is also still supported.) The only caveat is that that the old Mosaic-based method using xmbima is no longer supported. Xmbima users should consult the instructions for first-time users for details on how to use Netscape and DaRT to download data.

While we hope the new interface will be largely intuitive, we expect that many of you will have questions or comments regarding the new system. We strongly encourage you to send them to us via bimadata@ncsa.uiuc.edu. As the processing pipeline develops, so will the archive interface, so your feedback will be crucial in making the archive a useful as well as innovative research tool.

DaRT 3.0.3 now available

The latest version of DaRT was released on 2000 Aug 11. Besides a few bug fixes, it includes support for new services provided by the new Archive system. For more info, go to the DaRT Home Page.
